Treadmill, Dreadmill, Shredmill: it's the Same Torture Mill

But, it's becoming a very dear friend.

Right now, our part of the country looks like this.

And, therefore, me and the Mill are becoming quite close.  My last run outside was on November 20th.  Since then, I have run my four weekly runs on the treadmill.  Do I love it?  Not so much.  But I feel very fortunate to have the option of just heading down to my basement for a run because I know many people aren't as lucky to have their own treadmill.  I also know that if I had to pack it up and head to a gym I probably wouldn't make it very often, especially when the roads are like this.

Sometimes, like yesterday, it's very hard to even drag myself to the basement.  School was cancelled due to snow which ruined the plans of spending time Christmas shopping for our child.  That meant the need to get up and out early was gone.  Once I finally managed to drag myself out of bed, it was 10:30!  I know, I know.  Then I relocated my lazy self to the couch where I settled in with the computer, TV and coffee.  A true recipe for laziness, but I did have some work to get done, after all, wasn't I justified?

Well, finally I mustered some energy to change into my workout clothes and headed downstairs about 12:30.  I'm proud to say I completed 5 miles on that damn Mill.  I changed things up by plugging my iPod into the stereo so I could go without headphones.   The difference in being completely untethered during the run was awesome.  I still used Nike+, I just set my iPhone on the console and let it keep track of my distance.  It really was a small change, but it ewas enough of one to take away the hum-drums I've been feeling about the Mill.

Unfortunately, I am still having issues with my knee.  This morning when I got up I could barely walk down the stairs.  I cannot even express how discouraging that is.  I'm wondering if I should take some time off from running, but I really don't want to.  I'm actually really scared to.  Scared I'll lose momentum and motivation, and endurance.  It seems like you lose stamina so quickly.  I don't know what to do yet.  For sure I'll be postponing my weekend run until at least tomorrow and then we'll see.

Anyway, today we're decorating our house for Christmas. I absolutely love Christmas, it's my favorite time of year.  I love the festivities, the decorations, and the giving spirit in the air.  It definitely makes dealing with this a little easier!

  1. Oh, I hope your knee improves. Why is it that just when we've found our 'groove' something happens to try and mess things up (becoming sick, injury, etc..)
We don't have quite as much snow here in Indiana but tomorrow we're supposed to get hammered!

  2. I'm so happy to see you've been able to become BFFs with your treadmill. It won't be long until the white stuff starts to fly around my parts as well. I hope your knee feels better soon. Treat it well!

  3. Bummer, I hate injuries. I just got my 3rd one since January. (Knee, Chestwall Contusion and now Tennis Elbow) All from exercise over use. I guess I am finally learning the difference between stretched muscles and injuries. You would think after the first 2 I would get it. I should have taken it easy the first couple times my arm hurt. If I would have maybe I would not be so bad off now. (Had to go to the doctos and physical therapy. Now I have to ice and exercise the arm, Advil etc) I've been in PT for 2 weeks and it's worse. Mostly because I won't stop and give it a rest. I think I'm prolonging my healing. Such a bummer!

    Keep focused!

  5. I've been on the phone, back and forth, with NordicTrak about my treadmill for the past week. We've had it for a quite a while, and we can no longer run on it. We assumed it was because it was old, and the motor was going out. I read online that they usually have lifetime warranties on their treadmill motors, so called to find out what I needed to do. They seem to think the issue is as simple as adjust (loosening) the tension on the belt. I can't wait to get home and try it! A treadmill at home again will be great! Right now, it just takes up space in the corner and looks so lonely. :-)

If you knee is still hurting, maybe instead of stopping altogether, you can just walk a little more than run.....and see if that helps? I know what you mean about being afraid of losing momentum.

  6. oh Lori I feel the same way, I hate that damn machine! But I found working with it a little and trying to make it work for me helped.
I find that if I go on a 1 or 2 degree incline and not run on a flat surface it works better for me, it beats running in the snow!
Glad that you are learning to like it a little more, but like you I prefer to run outside, when it's warm ;-)

  7. I'm becoming good friends with the treadmill too. We got our first snow fall this weekend.
:( So I know how it goes! Take it easy on that knee- you don't want to injure yourself so that you can't run at all!
